This lot not only has impressive views, but overlooks the remains of a sunken, early 20th century steam boat called The Pastime. The wreck cannot be removed. The boat belonged to Tom Harrison, an old timer, who lived on board while it was moored at Tom’s Point in the 1930s. An on board fire sunk the vessel in 1937, though, fortunately, no life was lost. The ship exemplifies how transport in the region changed after the introduction of motorized boats in 1872. In that year, the first boat left from Hungry Hall, the Hudson’s Bay Company post on the mouth of Rainy River, and traversed to Northwest Angle Inlet in the southwest of the Lake of the Woods. From that time onwards steamboats carried freight and passengers, towed log booms, and were used in the commercial fishing industry. Suddenly, travel and exploration of the region’s thousands of islands was possible without total reliance on brute force and unpredictable weather conditions. Specifications: Access to Tom’s Point lot is from a municipal road, the MacKenzie Ward Way. This lot is just under two acres in size with 200 feet of lake frontage. The property is fully treed with a mix of medium growth deciduous and coniferous trees. The land is medium profile with primarily rocky shoreline and good water depths. Exposure and wonderful views are present to the south and east. Site development plans and work including building site preparation, septic fields, hydro and road access to each of these lots will be done by the Estate’s professional team acting under architect David Nelson’s overall supervision. All development must respect the environmental and wildlife protection needs of the area. Price: CAD$295,000
